MATA Architects is an RIBA Chartered architecture practice based in Westminster, London.
Our work is guided by a keen awareness of space, light and materials and the manipulation of these to create bespoke, crafted solutions.
As we are based in Westminster, we have conducted multiple projects in the surrounding areas and are familiar with the process of working in central London. One of our most recent projects at Tatham Place was a two-storey rear extension to a family home in St. Johns Wood, City of Westminster.
We worked closely with the clients to create an open and collaborative relationship. We listened to them and understood what was important to them, from this we approached their brief by creating a bright and functional transitional space, linking the garden to a ground floor of the house.
Our team together with a structural engineer worked to develop a scheme that included a combination of steel and structural timber. Raised soffits present a feeling of extra height while large sliding glazed doors completely open up the space to the garden.
We believe that architecture should be self-critical and always challenge the traditional conventions, while also actively engaging with commercial reality and the unique social and cultural context within which it occurs.
Ultimately, it is this crossroads that produces architecture that is both thought provoking and durable.
With the majority of our work located in Central London and Conservation areas, we are particularly interested in questions arising from the careful introduction of the ‘new’ into existing urban fabric.
