Our second ‘Carmel’ restaurant for the Berber &Q group located in Fitzrovia at 7-8 Market Place, London W1. Comprising 396m2 arranged over ground and lower ground floors, the restaurant accommodates 95 covers internally and a further 28 externally. A large prep kitchen occupies the basement level with all seating at ground floor in a combination of booths, linear banquettes, bar and open kitchen counters, satellite tables.

The deep and relatively narrow dimensions of the site naturally break the space up into 3 different areas; the entrance, that benefits from natural daylight penetration and a connection to the street via full-width glazed bi-fold doors and an open and airy feel, the middle, that is naturally dark, atmospheric and intimate, and the back ‘Garden room’ which is flooded with natural daylight via large rooflights and, in the daytime, draws the eye in from the entrance.
Our design embraces the juxtaposition of light and dark and, in materiality and detailing, that of rough/ raw vs refined. The walls behind linear banquettes are left ‘unfinished’ and raw, trowelled with tile adhesive, creating a gritty and raw texture. This is juxtaposed against refined banquette seating, joinery elements and overflowing planters.

A steel and timber screen running the length of the restaurant ties the different areas together, drawing the visitor in. With wine displayed on the top shelves, plants and objects of interest on the lower shelves, the screen adds to the layering of the space and creates a natural separation between the narrower ‘service runway’ and the more spacious circulation route for diners.
