Our client, a semi-retired couple, have lived in this Grade II listed house, raising a family, for close to 20 years. They originally approached us whilst looking at a site for a new build house nearby. When the purchase of that plot didn’t work out as planned, we helped them assess their options. Our initial work supported a cost/ benefit analysis of staying put vs moving house. The question was, could their home of 20 years be adapted and upgraded for the next chapter of their life? Whilst more space was sought, the priority was on providing better quality space; enhanced natural daylight, a better connection with the garden and a more efficient and functional layout.
Our proposal includes a full width glazed rear extension to improve the connection with the garden whilst bringing in an abundance of natural light. The original rear wall of the house (now internal to the plan) is retained in part, preserving the ‘memory’ of the original building line and historic building fabric. This wall is ‘punched through’ in two strategic locations to create connections with the kitchen space behind and the stair landing above that now doubles as a gallery overlooking the living space.
