O-House is a large, single storey rear extension to a detached family home in Bromley, South London. Our client, a local business owner, his wife and 3 children, have lived in the property since it was first built in 2002.

The existing ground floor comprises of three separate living spaces; kitchen, lounge and dining room. No internal renovation has been completed in the last 17 years with the exception of two add-on conservatories at the rear that awkwardly link the lounge and dining room.

The client brief was to open up the ground floor plan as far as possible to create a large, free-flowing kitchen and living space whilst maximising opportunities for daylight and sunlight where the rear of house is North-West facing. The client wanted a great entertaining space where they could host friends and family.

We set out to achieve this with a number of strategies:

Draw the garden into the house with the creation of a ‘garden room’ to house a tree/planting and sheltered outdoor space. This also serves to create a direct connection and views to the garden from the front entrance door.
A combination of sliding glazing allowing the rear facade to completely open up to the garden and blurs the boundaries between inside and outside.
Large circular roof lights pull light into the darker areas of the plan and animate the interior spaces as the play of shadows change throughout the day.
