O-House is a large, single storey rear extension to a detached family home in Bromley, South London. Our client, a local business owner, his wife and 3 children, have lived in the property since it was first built in 2002.
The existing ground floor comprises of three separate living spaces; kitchen, lounge and dining room. No internal renovation has been completed in the last 17 years with the exception of two add-on conservatories at the rear that awkwardly link the lounge and dining room.
The client brief was to open up the ground floor plan as far as possible to create a large, free-flowing kitchen and living space whilst maximising opportunities for daylight and sunlight where the rear of house is North-West facing. The client wanted a great entertaining space where they could host friends and family.
We set out to achieve this with a number of strategies:
- Draw the garden into the house with the creation of a ‘garden room’ to house a tree/planting and sheltered outdoor space. This also serves to create a direct connection and views to the garden from the front entrance door.
- A combination of sliding glazing allowing the rear facade to completely open up to the garden and blurs the boundaries between inside and outside.
- Large circular roof lights pull light into the darker areas of the plan and animate the interior spaces as the play of shadows change throughout the day.
