A two storey rear extension (basement and ground floor levels) to a family home in St. Johns Wood.

Our approach to the brief was to create a bright and functional transitional space linking the garden with the ground floor of the house. A definite kink in the ground floor plan constructs a direct line of sight from the front door through the kitchen and on to the garden.

In collaboration with structural engineer, Structure Mode, we developed the structural scheme to include a combination of steel and structural timber. The timber structure, comprising glulam Sweet Chestnut beams and load bearing studs is exposed and expressed internally in the ground floor of the extension, bringing a warmth and richness to the new space.

As well as reducing the size of steel sections required, the use of deep ceiling timber joists extends the existing ceiling level in a repeated rhythm towards the garden. Raised soffits deliver a feeling of additional height while large sliding glazed doors completely open up the space to the garden.
